SGI Indy

De Indy, met codenaam “Guinness”, is een low-end werkstation dat op 12 juli 1993 werd geïntroduceerd door Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI). Het bedrijf dat het heeft ontwikkeld en geproduceerd om in een de poging hiermee een deel van de low-end computer-aided design (CAD), desktop publishing en multimedia markten te verkrijgen. Helaas heeft het niet lang mogen duren en is de productie stopgezet in 1997.

James Clark en zeven afgestudeerden van Stanford University richtten in 1982 Silicon Graphics.

Zijn super coole werkstations werden gebruikt in Hollywood om de special effects te maken. Zoals in Toy Story in 1995 en voor defensie en wetenschappelijke simulatie.

Het bedrijf was kortstondig eigenaar van Cray, de supercomputer maker, maar toen de grafische technologie beter werd, kwam het bedrijf in de problemen. Het bedrijf werd in mei 2009 verkocht aan Rackable Systems, dat nu handelt onder de naam Silicon Graphics International.

(NASDAQ:RACK), a leading provider of ecological servers and storage products for medium to large-scale data centers, today announced that it received court approval to acquire substantially all of the assets of Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) for $42.5 million in cash, plus the assumption of certain liabilities associated with the acquired assets.
